Review by Janessa Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest is home to many of San Diego's most interesting restaurants. The only real burger joint there, and the best I've ever been to, is the Corvette Diner. The Corvette Diner caters to a wide variety of age groups; however, I would recommend it as a great party place for kids. Set up as a fifties-style diner, the Corvette Diner offers plenty of visual stimulation! The walls are covered with all kinds of fifties paraphanelia, and the restaurant is complete with a dj and its own radio station. The oldies tunes are cranked up to full volume, and the waiters and waitresses, clad in full fifties garb, dance as they serve. The menu consists mainly of gourmet burgers and sandwiches, all with interesting names like "The Hawaii Five-O Burger", (which is, by the way, my personal favorite - crisp bacon, sliced pineapple, all smothered in teriyaki sauce). And what fifties diner would be complete without out-of-this-world shakes and malts? I recommend ordering the Elvis Shake - bananas, peanut butter, chocolate fudge, and vanilla ice cream, all mixed together and topped with a mountain of whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. For kid's birthdays, costumes are welcome and the service personnel go way out to make it a fun experience. They make silly hats for all, and song and dance are to be expected! For the adult, there is a great full-service bar and a wide array of interesting mixers and shooters. The loud music and fun environment are perfect for meeting people and great parties for the kids. And the burgers are to die for! Try it out -The Corvette Diner- located on Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest. |
